What Is a Filter Press Plate?

A filter press plate is one of the main components that works together with filter cloths inside a filter press to separate solids from liquids. When the plates are compressed by the hydraulic system, enclosed filtration chambers are formed between them. The material to be filtered is then pumped into these chambers under pressure.

During filtration, the liquid passes through the filter cloths, reaches the drainage channels on the plate surfaces and is discharged from the machine through the filtrate outlets. Solid particles are retained on the filter cloths and accumulate inside the chambers between the plates, forming a layer known as the filter cake.

Filter press plates have specially designed channels on their surfaces to ensure the smooth flow of liquid. These channels help direct the liquid passing through the filter cloth towards the outlet points. At the same time, the plate surface supports the filter cloth and enables it to withstand the pressure applied during operation.

Filter press plates used in industrial applications are commonly made of polypropylene. Polypropylene is widely preferred in filter press systems because of its resistance to corrosion, moisture and many chemicals. Its lightweight structure, ease of cleaning and long service life are also among its key advantages.

The size of a filter press plate and the cake volume it provides directly affect the total filtration capacity of the machine. Increasing the number of plates increases both the total filtration area and the amount of filter cake that can be produced. However, plate size alone is not sufficient when selecting the appropriate plate. The solids content, temperature and chemical properties of the material, as well as the desired cake characteristics, must also be considered.

Filter press plates are used in many industries that require solid-liquid separation, including wastewater treatment, marble processing, mining, chemicals, paint, metal finishing, ceramics, food processing and vegetable oil production. Using plates and filter cloths suited to the process has a significant effect on filtration time and the moisture content of the resulting filter cake.

Once filtration is complete, the feed pump is stopped and the hydraulic system is released in a controlled manner. The plates are separated and the filter cakes formed between them are discharged. Regular cleaning of the plate surfaces and liquid outlet channels helps maintain the filtration efficiency of the machine.

To select the correct filter press plate, the characteristics of the material to be filtered and the daily processing capacity required by the facility should be evaluated together. Where necessary, a filtration test can be performed on a product sample to determine the appropriate plate size, filter cloth and machine capacity more accurately.
